Hiring Wisdom: Accountability Is a Two-Way Street

Action is routinely taken against job applicants and employees because of misrepresentations on their resumes.

On the other hand, I’m hearing more and more accounts of people accepting — and subsequently leaving — jobs because the work and/or the responsibilities turned out to be significantly different than what was originally promised.

In today’s “War for Talent,” it seems that hiring managers will say just about anything (and/or omit important information) to entice a promising candidate to sign on. This wrongheaded “strategy” serves neither the employer nor the applicant.

When the actual job differs significantly from what the applicant agreed to, either the new hire quits or the employer has a disgruntled, disappointed employee on its hands.

    Very true. Hiring Managers should educate the candidates about the job offered and the responsibilities which can be out of the job description. In this way, the candidate is educated and aware of the work which is not written in the job description. It will also help employer to assign any job as and when needed.

    Very excellent point, Mel. We are also hearing more accounts of employee dissatisfaction due to employers’ misleading job descriptions and interviews. The fact is, employers should want to find the right fit the first time because disgruntled employees leave quickly or don’t complete work to their full potential, causing employers to lose money in the process. Employers, don’t fudge job facts just to land the most alluring candidates; save your company money by selecting the right fitting candidates for a video or in-person interview the first time around
