Hiring Wisdom: It’s Not Always About the Money

The easiest things to say in an exit interview is that the reason you are leaving is for things like going back to school, moving out of the area, or being offered more money.

A recent survey of over 19,000 exit interviews by The Saratoga Institute found that 88 percent said they were leaving for a reason other than money.

They also found that 89 percent of employers said they believed that employees left only because of money!

Here’s what this means for you:

Don’t think you can’t compete just because you can’t offer top dollar.

Most employees are interested in a lot of things other than just the money — things like a great boss, interesting work, growth, opportunity, recognition, and a family-friendly environment.

    I’m not at all surprised! The latest numbers show that 71% of all American employees are “not engaged” or “actively disengaged” at work… meaning that they hate their jobs! Money is rarely the primary reason. Horrible bosses, annoying co-workers, inflexible working conditions, work that brings no joy or fulfillment… those are the reasons that people are leaving!
