We’re going to go out on a limb here and flat out say, you never thought compliance was sexy. Now spend the next five minutes with Kate Bischoff and you’ll come away if not entirely convinced, at least realizing it’s not the legal straitjacket you’ve always believed.

And you might just find yourself saying “No” a lot less.

An attorney and consultant, Bischoff is founder and owner of tHRive Law & Consulting LLC., and says right there on the website, “Compliance doesn’t mean HR always says no.  It means we work together to find innovative ways to meet business needs and the law’s requirements.” That was her message to the DisruptHR audience in Minneapolis last fall: “In every compliance situation there’s at least three options.”

Telling a manager why they can’t do something doesn’t have to always be the answer from HR. “We can be innovative. We can use new tools that will help do really cool things. We can problem solve and think outside the box,” Bischoff says. What’s more, innovation doesn’t have to be expensive. “A good understanding of what the rules are and what we need to do brings us into balance,” she adds, enabling HR to do what’s right for the employees.

Listening to what Bischoff has to say may not convince you compliance is sexy, but it will give you the confidence to explore the options when a manager comes to you with a problem.

In partnership with DisruptHR, TLNT presents some of the best Disrupt presentations from events across North America and now the world. Disrupt talks are modeled on the TEDx concept: Short, to the point talks on all things HR — talent, culture and technology.
