Looking for that seat at the table? Take Amy Bastuga’s “No Bullshit” approach.
“Influencing leaders is how we have the biggest impact in our organizations. So, our job is to eliminate bullshit,” she says. “This leaves room for authenticity, integrity and positive results.”
With that opening declaration to her Chicago DisruptHR audience last fall, Bastuga went on to lay out a three point strategy for eliminating bullshit and gaining influence.
She’s SVP of HR for the red wagon company Radio Flyer, so Bastuga’s 3 “BS” points come from actual experience in the hot seat: Blind Spots, Break Silence and Boring Solutions. Briefly, here’s what each strategy means:
- Blind Spots — Give executives the feedback that others may not. Help them see their blind spots.
- Break Silence — Talk about those important matters that others don’t. Point out the elephant in the room.
- Boring Solutions — Solutions don’t all have to be bold. “Boring solutions are OK.” “Hire an awesome team.” “Bring stats.” When you don’t know, say so.
In this 5-minute presentation, Bastuga puts it all together in a way that will leave you ready to cut through the bull and exert influence without waiting for a formal table invitation.
