“Are you really prepared for the fact that robots are coming for you and your jobs?”

Chances are that’s not a question asked before at a DisruptHR meeting, but what could be more disrupting for HR than being disrupted right out of a job? That’s why Jennifer McClure, CEO of DisruptHR and the founder and CEO of Unbridled Talent, tells her Calgary audience of HR professionals, “You need to start preparing for the robot apocalypse.”

How do you do that? In her 5 minutes, McClure lays out the 5-step plan, which is worth paying attention to even if you’re one of those who thinks this whole robotics thing is overblown. (And if you’re even a little bit of a doubter, take a look at this collection of TLNT articles .)

Step 1, she says, is to be creative: “Think about how you can be fun; how you can be creative with the processes in your work today.”

Step 2 is to hone your judgment. Robots and artificial intelligence are highly effective at making decisions based on sifting through enormous amounts of data. What they can’t do, McClure observes, is to consider external factors that may weigh on the data. Don’t focus on gathering and presenting data, use judgment to make sense of it.

What else does she advise? Spend 5 minutes being a little bit alarmed, a little entertained, and becoming a whole lot smarter about what 21st century HR needs to be, whether that’s because the robots are coming or you just want to be better at what you do.

In partnership with DisruptHR, TLNT presents some of the best Disrupt presentations from events across North America and now the world. Disrupt talks are modeled on the TEDx concept: Short, to the point talks on all things HR — talent, culture and technology.
