Just as in marriage, when an employer and new employee “wed,” there’s usually a honeymoon.
How long it lasts, however, varies widely. Sometimes it’s a week or more and sometimes it’s over before it even begins.
When the employer is the first to be disillusioned, it’s most often because the hiring system doesn’t screen for the attitudes it takes to be successful on the job.
When the employee is disillusioned first, it’s most often because the employer didn’t give the new hire an accurate overview of what the job really entails.
You don’t do yourself any favors when you gloss over the tough or unpleasant parts of a job.
The kind of people you want on board will accept your job offer anyway. The kinds of people you don’t want will either turn you down, not show up at all, or quit during the first week.
