HR Should Be Making People Uncomfortable

Are you doing something everyday that makes you uncomfortable? You should, you must, says Kelly Poulson, VP of coaching & development at Allen & Gerritsen.

And why? Because, she told a Phildaelphia DisruptHR audience a few months ago, “If you are comfortable, you are not learning.”

With a slide of faces up on the screen behind her, Poulson said, “This is the C-suite where I work. If I am pushing those people to think differently about the employee experience… and making them feel uncomfortable, that’s a win.”

Don’t interpret as thinking Poulson wants HR people to be outrageous or rebellious. Not at all, listen to her 5 minute presentation and you’ll be inspired to push, even a little, out of your comfortable zone to be innovative.

As she says, “Take a look in the mirror. Are you doing something everyday that pushes your own boundaries a little bit?”

DISRUPT is an information exchange designed to energize, inform and empower people in the HR field.

Founded by Disrupt's CEO Jennifer McClure, events are organized by volunteer teams working with Disrupt staff who assist in the planning. Events have a maximum of 14 speakers, who get 5 minutes and no more than 20 slides for their presentation.
