What Do You Hear After They Tell You They’re a Felon?

What would you say if a job candidate began the interview this way: “I’m an alcoholic and a drug addict”? Maybe an “Oh.” And then go through the motions?This presentation

But what if you actually listened.

“Maybe,” Cheri Garcia tells her DisruptHR audience, “You would get somebody who’s actually telling the truth instead of somebody telling you why they’re perfect for the job and finding out later there’s something else up.”

From that opening you might expect Garcia’s presentation to be a pitch about hiring substance offenders. It’s not. At least not entirely. It is about not slamming the door before former drug users, recovering alcoholics and especially ex-felons get to showing you the other side of themselves.

“I know about the diamonds in the rough,” she says. “I’m one of them.”

This presentation isn’t about statistics, ROI or second chance pleas. All Garcia asks for from her audience, from recruiters, is not write off a felon because they checked the box that says, “Yes” they have been convicted.

“I would actually like to encourage people to listen. Let somebody reveal their story to you so you can understand.”
