Why HR Should Become the Organization’s “Wise Sage”

What are HR people? “Dream crushers,” says Erin Greilick.”People would rather have a root canal than be around people in HR.”

Why is that? “If we’re not laying people off, we’re often times busting them for bad behavior,” Greilick explains in her 5 minute presentation last fall at a DisruptHR meeting in Oklahoma City.

HR’s response to that negative impression has been to remake its role to one of business partner. But what that too often means is that HR has become an order taker, maintains Greilick, a consultant on leadership development, team building and strategic change.

Her solution is for HR to adopt the role of the “wise sage.” Watch the video to see what she means.

Note: In partnership with DisruptHR, TLNT presents some of the best Disrupt presentations from events across North America and now the world. Disrupt talks are modeled on the TEDx concept: Short, to the point talks on all things HR — talent, culture and technology.

DISRUPT is an information exchange designed to energize, inform and empower people in the HR field.

Founded by Disrupt's CEO Jennifer McClure, events are organized by volunteer teams working with Disrupt staff who assist in the planning. Events have a maximum of 14 speakers, who get 5 minutes and no more than 20 slides for their presentation.
