Here’s Why You Need to Enter the Effective Leaders Competition

What does it take to be an effective leader? More importantly, what kind of management practices does it take to lead a high-performing team?

The answers to these questions are what the Most Effective Leadership Practices Competition is all about.

Frequent TLNT contributor Dr. Theresa M. Welbourne (she does the monthly Leadership Pulse surveys) has developed this competition along with her eePulse organization and the Center for Effective Leadership (CEO) at the University of Southern California. If you manage people formally or informally, then you are eligible to participate in this competition whether you are a leader in your day job or in volunteer activities.

Why is this competition important? Here’s why:

Leaders and managers create and implement innovative and motivating ways of managing every day. These innovations contribute a huge value in increased productivity for their teams, organizations and the world, but they go unrecognized as they are often incremental or used only within the leaders realm of influence. We want to identify these managers, recognize them for their innovation and expertise and help share their best practices with other leaders. Through the celebration and sharing of the most effective practices, people will learn from actions of their peers.

This competition will identify the best practices from those participating leaders, recognize them, and award prizes to the winners at the annual TLNT Transform conference that will be held in Austin, Texas in February 2012. TLNT is one of the sponsors of this contest, and I’ll have some additional details about TLNT Transform in the next few days that you will want to know about, too.

As we battled it out during the recession, we heard stories of innovation, kindness, strength and more from employees. They talked about how their managers and members of the leadership team were helping their organizations survive and even thrive.

We want to capture these successes, not just from larger, global, for-profit organizations, but also from the non-for-profit institutions, small-town businesses, entrepreneurial firms and more. We want to learn from and celebrate the accomplishments of every-day managers and the people that are making organizations great.

While firms often compete for best places to work, this competition takes a different stance and celebrates the people who are making great organizations successful.”

Yes, knowing about the best places to work is a nice thing, but recognizing and honoring “the people who are making great organizations successful” really resonates with me because without the high-performing people who lead those organizations, there are no “best places to work.”
