Hiring Wisdom: Some Good “What If?” Questions You Need to Be Asking

What if you suddenly discovered the labor pool had completely dried up and no one would ever apply for your job openings again?

  • Would you wish you would have hired to higher standards before?
  • Would you have fixed your mistakes faster, i.e., terminated and replaced new hires who weren’t working out as soon as you noticed?
  • Would you wish you would have trained and managed the employees you have differently?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, why not start today?

Now, let’s reverse engineer the situation. What if it suddenly became illegal to get rid of the employees you’ve hired — unless they wanted to leave or only if you paid them a month’s severance for every month they worked for you up to 24 months?

  • Would you hire to higher standards?
  • Would you fix your mistakes faster by terminating and replacing new hires who aren’t up to snuff?
  • Would you train and manage your people differently?
